How many people do you know who have a career in the major they selected when they entered college for the first time? For many, the pathway from college to career is filled with side tracks, loops, wandering, and serendipity. It is rare to find someone who starts college with a specific career track in mind and four years later finds a job in that exact area. Yet, we assume that the linear path is the true path even though we know the roundabout way is the way many of us found our careers.
Finding the right path often required finding the right people. Someone who could help us think outside the box. People who helped us to see that the path we were on needed a tweak or a reorientation toward a different destination.
The Fall Symposium this year is a celebration of those people at URI who “teach outside the box”. The people who help students uncover their love for something new; those who mentor students and help them adjust their path; those who recognize that the most efficient path is not necessarily the straight one. The best path is the one that leads students where they want to go. This Symposium celebrates those of you who walk those paths with students.
