New Faculty Teaching Pathway

Becoming acquainted with a new role is an ongoing process. Rather than having a one-day, do-it-all orientation, ATL will walk with you over the course of your first year with just-in-time information to help you be successful. The purpose of the New Faculty Teaching Pathway is to develop durable teaching strategies, relationships, and navigational capital that you can use to be successful throughout your career at URI. Starting a new position is a lot better when you do it with friends. Sign up for this New Faculty Teaching Pathway and start off on the right foot together.

Program Outcomes

  1. Develop relationships in a cohort-based program with other new URI faculty and among existing URI faculty and staff.
  2. Begin a growth-oriented teaching journey with durable teaching skills and resources that build towards long-term teaching effectiveness.
  3. Identify campus resources and processes which support career progression and determine a plan that fosters a satisfying career at URI.

Completion Criteria

Earning the certificate for the New Faculty Teaching Pathway is as easy as 1-2-3:

  1. At the end of Summer, participate in Strategies & Tools for New Faculty.
  2. In the Fall, engage in 3 of the 4 sessions. (See Fall tab below.)
  3. In the Spring, deepen your teaching practice and campus connections by engaging in two additional pathway activities of your choice. (See Spring tab below.)

Schedule

Fall Semester

There are two main purposes for the sessions in the fall: 1) deepen your connections to other new faculty members and 2) equip you with just-in-time information that you will need to be successful in your first year. (We developed these sessions by asking current faculty members what they wished someone would have told them in their first year.)

Where there are two options for the same session, you are only asked to attend one. If you cannot attend a session of interest or participate in Strategies & Tools, please reach out to teach@uri.edu.

Spring Semester

Where the purpose of the fall semester was to strengthen your connections to your fellow new instructors, the purpose of the spring is to jumpstart you finding “your people.” You may already have some idea of potential collaborators, centers on campus, or recreational resources that will be important to you. But URI is a big place and there are probably more opportunities out there. Connecting to campus (and its people) takes a whole career and is crucial for workplace satisfaction. The goal of the spring is start that career-long journey by doing some structured exploration.

To engage with this sheet:

  • Pick one (or more) of the paths you wish to explore: teaching skills, scholarly teaching, vitality and well being, or connecting to campus.
  • Participate in at least two activities (one per path or two for one path). There are some examples of activities listed or you can find your own.
  • Once you have done two activities, submit a short reflection (two paragraphs total) on your experience to the Brightspace site for the New Faculty Teaching Pathway.

Download a copy of the pathways sheet as a .pdf.
