2015 Rhode Island Summer Chess Program

Cost: $150 (all proceeds from the program will go to RI Chess Association and the Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale)

Why Chess?

Chess has been played and enjoyed by people around the world for almost two thousand years. Summer is a great time to enroll your children in this state-wide chess program. We believe learning and playing chess directly contributes to academic performance. Studies show that children who learn chess show rapid improvements in:

  • mathematics,
  • reading,
  • spatial awareness,
  • visualization,
  • focus,
  • social skills and much more.

Not only does chess engage students of all learning styles and strengths, but it also promotes problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

How does it work?

Whether playing for fun or competition, brand-new to the game or experienced, this summer chess program caters to all children of different abilities and offers:

  1. Instruction for new players – Don’t know how to play chess? Come to the club and learn the game.
  2. Recreational play – Providing a fun environment for kids to come and play chess with each other.
  3. Instruction for experienced players – For the player ready to advance, begin studying tactics and
    strategies.
  4. Club competition – Have mini-tournaments and competitions to stimulate interest.
  5. Tournament competition – Competing with other schools or participating in local tournaments offers a new level of excitement and also provides incentive for advanced instruction.

About the Coach: Christopher Gu

Christopher Gu is a talented youth chess player. At age 12, he became the youngest National Chess Master and state champion in Rhode Island history! He is currently ranked #4 in the U.S. in his age group and has been a member of the All-American Chess Team every year since 2011. Christopher competed in various national and international chess tournaments since he was a young child. His biggest chess accomplishment to date was winning the 2014 National Denker High School Chess Championship in Orlando, Florida.
