A message from the URI Commencement Committee

Since the COVID-19 pandemic remains a public health crisis, the University of Rhode Island would like to provide you with an update regarding in-person commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2020.

As you know, we held a variety of virtual celebrations in the spring with the hope of scheduling in-person ceremonies this fall. The virtual celebrations were planned, not to replace a traditional ceremony, but to confer degrees in a timely manner. Federal and state health authorities continue to issue regulations that essentially limit the size of large gatherings, making it impossible for the University to consider hosting in-person commencement celebrations in 2020.

We are deeply disappointed that we have to make this decision and hope you understand that it is made in the spirit of keeping you, your families, friends and the wider community as healthy and safe as possible. This resolution is consistent with the University’s preparations for the fall semester, which include the elimination of large lecture classes, cancellations of fall athletic contests in cooperation with its conferences and the conversion of many traditional in-person events to virtual experiences.

In planning ahead, we hope to hold in-person commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2020 in spring 2021, at a time and in a manner that safeguards the health and safety of our students, their families, and guests, adhering to the best advice and guidance of scientists and health authorities. At this time, the University cannot provide a specific date, but we will be in touch in early 2021 with updates.

Again, we are so proud of the Class of 2020; and when we are able to plan in-person ceremonies, we look forward to welcoming the graduates on campus to celebrate their outstanding accomplishments. We thank you for your patience and understanding as we do our best to keep our Rhody family healthy and safe during this difficult time.
