Biography

Kim McCarthy received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Rhode Island in 2006 and is a member of Pi Tau Sigma Engineering Honor Society. Upon graduation she began working as a Mechanical Engineer at Systems Engineering Associates Corporation (SEA Corp) in Middletown, Rhode Island. As a contractor for the Navy, Kim supports the Submarine Imaging Systems and Electronic Warfare Systems departments. She has experience being lead mechanical engineer and designing equipment to meet qualifications such as Grade A shock. She solves time-critical issues in an effort to determine root cause of failure and initiate subsequent repair or system component redesign, and has conducted testing on new technology as prospective replacements to existing designs.

While continuing to work at SEA Corp, Kim has recently defended her thesis forĀ a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering part-time. She elected to do the thesis option and her research investigates the effect of mechanical loading on the electrical response of graphene and nylon nanocomposite material. Graphene is a newly emerging material that shows promise for improving a variety of technologies and her research has potential industrial applications.

Kim loves running and has completed three marathons and numerous other races. In the past she has enjoyed mentoring young girls as an Assistant Girl Scout Leader.
