Fundamentals of Engineering Exam

The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam is the first critical step toward becoming a licensed professional engineer (PE). It tests your understanding of fundamental engineering principles acquired during your undergraduate studies.

Exam Overview
The FE Exam is a computer-based test (CBT) offered year-round at approved testing centers. You have 6 hours to complete 110 questions, which includes a tutorial and an optional scheduled break. During the exam, an official reference handbook provided by NCEES is available for use. For more information on exam format, registration, and preparation resources, visit the NCEES FE Exam page.

Rhode Island Requirements and Registration Details
The Rhode Island State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers does not require a separate application or fee before registering with NCEES. Examinees can register for the exam by creating a MyNCEES account. You are allowed one attempt per testing window and a maximum of three attempts within a 12-month period.

ATTENTION CIVIL ENGINEERING MAJORS!
Taking the FE Exam before graduation is a degree requirement for Civil Engineering students. Please send proof of exam completion to coe-forms-group@uri.edu
