Do I need research experience to participate in the URI ESTEEMED Program?
- No! We don’t expect students to have any research experience going into the program.
What if I don’t know what I want to do after graduation?
- That’s okay! Part of the URI ESTEEMED program is to allow students time to pursue various biomedical science-related topics and research to determine the best path for them.
Can I have another job while participating in URI ESTEEMED?
- No, students will typically not be allowed to work another job during the academic year while participating in ESTEEMED due to the academic and program expectations.
How many hours will I need to commit to the program each week during the academic year?
- Students will typically spend 10-15 hours a week on program activities, including weekly meetings, advising meetings, required study group sessions, ESTEEMED courses, and research.
How long is the duration of the program?
- The program will last during students’ freshmen and sophomore years. If students successfully complete the program, they will have priority consideration for participating in the URI MARC U*STAR Program to continue paid research during their junior and senior years.

How many students are selected for the program each year?
- Each year only 5 students will be selected to participate in the program.
What qualities are considered important in the application statement?
- Students interested in the program should have a passion for science, problem solving, and wanting to make a difference in the world around them.
