Barbara Caron

Barbara Caron is the editor-in-chief of the University of Rhode Island Magazine, URI’s premier print and digital publication, sent to all URI alumni and other audiences three times a year. In this role, she is responsible for developing, assigning, and editing all content; overseeing production and printing, including digital production; engaging with readers; and tracking reader engagement through various channels.

She is the magazine’s sole designated staff member, and collaborates with many campus partners, including the assistant director of publications and creative services, graphic designers, photographers, web content strategists, freelance and staff writers, and URI Foundation and Alumni Engagement staff.

Barbara oversaw the launch of the 2018 redesign of the magazine, which received a CASE Circle of Excellence Silver Award for Publishing Improvement in 2020.

Prior to her current role, which she has held since 2018, Barbara served as an editor for URI Publications and Creative Services for 14 years, where she worked on various print and digital publications, including materials for Commencement, a presidential retirement and a presidential inauguration, capital campaigns, strategic plans, special events, and college and departmental materials. She also worked on print and digital magazine content and oversaw digital news and events publications.

Before coming to URI, Barbara did freelance writing and editing, was the resource coordinator at Campus Compact—a national higher education service learning organization, and was the associate director of admissions at Bennington College.

Barbara graduated from Smith College with a degree in English literature.
