Through the Office of Fellowships@URI, there are many opportunities to study, research, teach, and/or learn a language abroad. However, it is paramount that matriculating students undertake the right steps to be in good standing with URI as you pursue global experiences. Specifically, those considering the following fellowships from the nonexhaustive list below should be sure to follow proper university procedure:

Boren, Critical Language Scholarship, Demers Language Fellowship, FLAD Azores, Fulbright*, Fulbright UK Summer Institutes, Gilman, and Metcalf Adventurer’s Fund.

Here is a checklist of items to consider:

• State Department advisories – Be sure that your country(ies) falls within a Level 1 or Level 2. For countries in a Level 3 or higher, the University will have to review on a case-to-case basis if your experience is possible. Simply receiving a fellowship to a Level 3 or 4 country does not guarantee university approval.

• Meet with your Education Abroad advisor via Starfish to discuss your proposed experience abroad so you are well aware of the parameters you must fulfill.

• Compete URIAbroad – Students must complete a URIAbroad application so as to be aware 

*Students who will be graduating from URI before the anticipated start date of their Fulbright experience are not considered matriculating students, and, therefore, do not need the Office of International Education approval for their experience abroad.
