On October 31, 2024, ABC News highlighted the record-high numbers of dengue cases reported so far in 2024, including the report of 11 cases of dengue acquired in Los Angeles county.
CDC data for 2024 show over 6,800 dengue cases reported through October 12, 2024, for the US and territories. Of these, more than 4,400 were locally-acquired and more than 2,300 were associated with travel. This number of travel-associated cases is higher than reported in any year since dengue became a nationally-notifiable disease in 2010, and reflects the global situation for dengue this year. Most of the locally-acquired cases of dengue for 2024 have been reported from Puerto Rico (over 4,200). Although mosquitoes that can transmit dengue can be found in many areas in the continental US, the risk of local transmission of dengue remains low.
