Ocean Exploration Trust

The URI Inner Space Center (ISC) is part of the Ocean Exploration Trust’s (OET) E/V Nautilus operational infrastructure. Support is provided through six core functions:

  • Telepresence infrastructure and operations: The ISC is the primary shore-based mission control hub for the vessel E/V Nautilus. The facility receives and distributes high-definition video, audio, data, and communications from the vessel and ROVs (Hercules and Argus) to power the global Nautilus Live broadcasts.
  • Engineering and technological innovation: The ISC team continually adapts satellite, network, video, communications, and cloud technologies to make telepresence more capable and scalable.
  • Distributed & remote science participation: The ISC extends the ship’s scientific capacity beyond its limited physical bunk space. Shore-based scientists, students, engineers and other specialists use the real-time video, data, and communications to guide operations, evaluate data, trouble-shoot issues, and identify discoveries live.
  • Education, outreach & public engagement: The ISC team transforms raw expedition feeds into live programming, broadcasts, and highly accessible on-demand content.
  • Management of the exploration record: facilitating the distribution of data and video to archives, on-demand content, and maintaining and serving recordings of ROV dives.
