RCRVS

The Inner Space Center supports the academic research fleet through providing and supporting advanced telepresence by request.  In particular, ISC provided shipboard technologies and shoreside expertise for R/V Endeavor during its active career by serving as its primary telepresence and live-streaming hub. The ISC integrated high-bandwidth satellite transmission and receiver equipment directly onto the vessel, linking its remote maritime operations to the shore in real time.

  • Live Broadcast Operations: The ISC acted as the exclusive live-streaming provider for the R/V Endeavor, hosting programs like Endeavor Live! to stream deep-sea dives and research operations directly to social media and public television networks.
  • At-Sea Staffing & Media Production: ISC production and media teams routinely sailed aboard the ship. They operated onboard recording equipment, directed video productions, and captured high-definition expedition footage.
  • Educational Outreach: The Center facilitated free, interactive “ship-to-school” opportunities. This allowed K-12 classrooms and university students on land to converse in real time with scientists and student researchers working on the vessel.
  • Scientific Collaboration: By beaming data and live video feeds straight from the ship back to the ISC’s onshore control rooms, the Center allowed shore-based scientists to participate in active cruises, guide remotely operated vehicle (ROV) surveys, and evaluate real-time data without needing physical space on the ship.

This work will continue with the upcoming launch of three Regional Class Research Vessels (RCRVs) R/V Narragansett Dawn, Taani, and Gilbert Mason, which the ISC will equip with basic telepresence systems, enabling these new vessels to support ship and shore participants natively.
