Overview
Joint replacements are one of the most successful surgical interventions to date. However, there are still joint replacements that fail for a number of reasons (e.g. wear, pain, infection, etc.). Few investigators have attempted to connect patient biomechanics at the end of the lifecycle of that joint replacement, with the reasons for the joint replacement to fail. We are collaborating with OrthoRI and the Dartmouth Biomedical Engineering Center to capture pre-operative biomechanics data, retrieve the failed device and have it analyzed at Dartmouth, and capture post-operative biomechanics data. The connections between the pre-/post-operative biomechanics data and joint replacement analysis metrics will drive future development of medical devices.
