Human Integrative Physiology (HIP) Lab

Overview

The HIPLab fields of study are primarily exercise physiology, clinical exercise physiology, and health sciences. The lab focuses on 1) understanding the etiology and association of secondary clinical manifestations (e.g., skeletal muscle dysfunction, inactivity, cognitive dysfunction) in people with lung diseases. 2) the determination of the effects of different modalities of exercise training on muscle diffusion and gas delivery; and 3) the examination of mitochondrial muscle dysfunction in athletes, young adults with motor deficit, and healthy individuals. The use of noninvasive methodologies such as near infrared spectroscopy, triaxial accelerometry, ultrasound, photoplethysmography, and metabolimeter for gas exchange assessment, are the predominant methodologies used in the lab projects. These methodologies are well tolerated and offer the flexibility to incorporate basic science assessments to routine clinical evaluations in those projects with mechanistic design.
