The Language and Early Oromotor Skills (LEO) Lab in the University of Rhode Island’s College of Health Sciences, directed by Dr. Marc Maffei, investigates how young children develop the complex motor and linguistic skills that support communication. We combine state-of-the-art facial motion tracking and acoustic analysis of children’s speech with behavioral measures such as naturalistic play and standardized clinical assessments to better understand the connections between movement and language.
