Malachy McCaffrey

Biography

Malachy is a master’s student and NSF Graduate Research Fellow from the Bronx, NY who graduated URI’s Marine Biology Program in 2020. He has since cast a wide net professionally. From 2020-2021, Malachy served as a North Pacific Groundfish Observer in Alaska with Saltwater, Inc. He then joined the University of Texas Marine Science Institute in 2021 as a laboratory technician across three research groups, and later transitioned to the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve in 2022 as a water quality manager. Following his time on the Texas Coastal Bend, Malachy briefly worked as a coral research technician in 2023 along the Florida Reef Tract with the Coral Reef Health and Ecology Lab at FAU Harbor Branch. Malachy joins the Lewis Lab with a wealth of knowledge and experience that has guided his interest in using a transdisciplinary approach to address human and environmental challenges on our coasts. He is excited to work closely with surrounding coastal communities, and expand his research toolbox with GIS and ecosystem modeling skills.
