Biography

Ashley Tai is a senior Cell and Molecular Biology and Chinese double major at URI, representing the class of 2023. In addition to being a MARC Trainee, she is the President of the student-run organization CELS Seeds of Success (SOS), a Biology Lead Tutor at the Academic Enhancement Center (AEC), and an executive board member for Student Advocacy for Disability Awareness/Action (SADA). Typically, you’ll find Ashley in the library studying with friends or in CBLS in the CELS Diversity Office. However, whenever she can spare a moment, Ashley loves visiting her family members who live in her hometown of Braintree, Massachusetts. Ashley also enjoys baking, singing, and playing with my rabbit!

Research

I work in Dr. Camberg’s Lab, with a research focus on Lon protease. By investigating enzyme catalyzed degradation by the AAA+ protease Lon to study Toxin-Antitoxin (TA) systems, we will better understand how cells respond to stress through proteolysis of regulatory proteins.

For my Summer Research Experience, I had the opportunity to study cellular stress responses in the Anderson/Ivanov Lab at Harvard Brigham and Women’s Hospital. My research focused on mammalian stress granules and processing bodies and their interactions.
