Biography

My long-term goal has always been to work in the medical field. However, I quickly learned in college that all medical knowledge is only made possible through the rigor and recourse of biomedical research. Now, I aspire to obtain a dual MD/PhD so that I can work with patients, while also contributing valuable research that can lead to a better understanding and treatment of catastrophic diseases. Specifically, I’m interested in cancer cell biology and oncology that focuses on diseases affecting children and infants. Coming from a large family, with over 10 younger brothers and sisters, I feel that working in pediatrics would continue to inspire and motivate me as I embark on the long journey to complete my MD/PhD and subsequent training.

Research

Working in Dr. Arnob Dutta’s lab was a fast-paced, immersive learning experience in the field of biomedical research. I was drawn to the lab because it used biochemical and genomic approaches to understand the role of the Swi/Snf chromatin remodeling complex in disease, which is a target for mutations in over 20% of human cancers. More specifically, the lab focused on studying the molecular mechanisms of gene regulation when mutations compromise the function of accessory subunits within the Swi/Snf complex. My primary role was to assist in tasks such as human cell culture and immunoassays, while also learning a wide-breadth of experimental methods in cell & molecular biology.
