Biography

Born in Limerick, Ireland, Howlett studied Chemistry at the University of Limerick. He received his Ph.D. in Biological and Molecular Sciences from Oxford Brookes University in the U.K and performed postdoctoral research at Harvard School of Public Health, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and the University of Michigan. He joined the faculty at the University of Rhode Island in 2007.

Research

His research interests include Fanconi anemia – a rare genetic disease characterized by increased risk for bone marrow failure and cancer, cancer genetics, and the cellular DNA damage response.  His research program has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, the American Society of Hematology, and the Leukemia Research Foundation, and he has mentored numerous URM STEM undergraduate and graduate students in his laboratory.
