The Pharmaceutical Development Institute (PDI) at the University of Rhode Island’s College of Pharmacy connects industry with the expertise, facilities, and resources of a leading research university to advance pharmaceutical innovation and strengthen the life sciences workforce.
Located in Avedisian Hall on URI’s Kingston campus, PDI combines industry-experienced professionals, specialized laboratories, and hands-on training facilities to support pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies at every stage of growth.
Through customized workforce development programs, analytical testing, and pharmaceutical development services, we help industry partners build technical capabilities, address complex challenges, and advance promising innovations.

Our Facilities & Capabilities
PDI provides access to specialized laboratory and training environments designed to support workforce development, analytical testing, and pharmaceutical development.
Our facilities include a 6,000-square-foot cleanroom facility with 3 processing suites, 1,500-square-foot analytical sciences laboratory and a 1,000-square-foot training center, supported by experienced pharmaceutical industry professionals and the research expertise of URI faculty and staff. Our capabilities include:
- Analytical method development and quality control testing
- Hands-on biomanufacturing training environments
- ISO-classified processing suites
- Cell culture and aseptic processing
- Chromatography, filtration, purification, and advanced analytical technologies
- Formulation and process development
- Early-stage pharmaceutical development and prototype manufacturing
