Biography

Jennifer Burgess is the Director of the Academic Enhancement Center within the Fannon Institute for Student Success at the University of Rhode Island. She is a first-generation college student who attended North Carolina State University, where she moved from Massachusetts and navigated college without family experience to guide her. During her time there, she became deeply involved on campus through multiple jobs, student organizations, and eventually continued into graduate school, building a strong sense of belonging and community. Her academic journey has continued beyond her undergraduate years, including earning another master’s degree from URI and pursuing additional professional development in higher education teaching, with plans for future doctoral study. Her career reflects a strong commitment to student success, access, and engagement. As a mentor, Jennifer is passionate about helping students feel connected and supported, especially those who may not yet have a built-in college support system. She encourages students to ask questions without hesitation and to embrace the learning process, reminding them that it is okay not to know everything and that seeking help is an important part of success.
