Biography

Karen Lokey is the Interim Director of IT Programs and Innovation within Information Technology Services (ITS) at the University of Rhode Island. In her role, she leads innovation initiatives, supports cross-functional teams, and helps advance the thoughtful use of emerging technologies across the university. Karen’s career path spans multiple industries and roles. With undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Religion, she began her professional journey working with at-risk youth before moving into furniture sales and later a corporate office environment. These varied experiences ultimately led her into a long-standing career in information technology, with roles across pharmaceuticals, K–8 education, and higher education. Throughout her career, Karen has focused on growth through exploration and adaptability. She values the guidance and encouragement she has received from mentors along the way and is committed to paying that support forward by helping others find clarity and confidence in their own paths. She encourages students to recognize that each experience, whether it feels like a success or not, can help guide the next step. Karen emphasizes that it is okay to trust your instincts, make adjustments along the way, and seek out perspectives from people outside your immediate circle. Her message to students is simple: every experience points you forward in some way, and it is okay to listen to your gut, adjust your direction, and learn from every step along the way.
