ACADEMIC AFFAIRS COMMITTEE MINUTES                                                                                 2, 6, 2013

MEETING START TIME: 5:31 pm

ATTENDANCE: Zawatsky, Dionne, Knoph, Maynard, Mendez, Rode, Schmuter, Walker

COMMITTEE DISCUSSION:

  • Academic posters with important drop dates for the semester passed out. Committee was asked to hang them up in RA offices.
  • Advising Report from Advising Steering committee discussed.
    • The report recognized how different advising is from college to college. This is beneficial because majors are different, but problematic for double majors or advisors contradicting each other. Need more networking between advisors.
    • Liked how advisors should mention different clubs that are major specific.
    • Pg. 7 – The recommendation for ongoing advising assessment committee was made. Point was made that student voices should be heard by committee.
    • Liked how the committee concluded advising needs to step up.
    • Liked how the report recommended general advising training for new faculty.
    • Liked the idea of the hybrid model (having professors be advisers to their students.) It allows you to have a better relationship with advisors.
    • Some practices that some colleges do should be made a standard practice. For example, contacting all students to let them know who their advisor is.
    • Overall, Academic committee agrees with the report. J term proposal.
    • J term allows you to catch up if you fail or are missing classes/credits.
    • About 3 weeks long. 3-4 credit maximum.
    • Classes will be driven by demand.
    • Will be voted on it by Faculty Senate later in the month. Could be implemented as early as January 2014 if approved by Faculty Senate.
    • Provost has asked Academic Committee to write a letter of support.
