Executive 9-7-2010

Boiteau, Coates, Cologna, Davis, MacKinnon, Messineo, Pezza, Prata, Rodrigues, Segal, Sinapi, Stewart

Pro Jo: Readership program since 2005. Newspaper is good on college campus and has been successful here. Now 1 cent a paper, lower prices than in the past. By January are hoping to be moving away from print to online version of paper. Last year had Sunday paper in Hope and sold well. Possibly put one in Butterfield. Freshman weren’t aware senate was paying for papers. Cost was about $20 a month last year. Money comes from student activity fee. New sections added to paper and revamped for appeal.

Cologna: Problem because Butterfield is closed on weekends and there is little room for them.

Coates: Low number of Sunday papers because we didn’t know popularity and they were 35 cents instead of 1 cent. Should bump up number.

Pro Jo: Have a rack instead of a box in hope? With more papers might be better.

Cologna: Get in contact with Hope and try and move the racks to a more convenient location.

Coates: How many on Sunday?

Pro Jo: Start with what had last year and move from there

Coates: Replicate last years contract. Draw up a bill put it on floor tomorrow and have a vote by next week.

Pro Jo: Add location to new science building CBLS. Start with 25 papers.

Last semester 110 daily and 45 Sunday papers. Now would be 135 daily and 45 Sunday and can change that if needed.

Finance

Boiteau: Received inventory system over summer but didn’t do anything yet. Guy we ordered it from will come down when we want to help us. Probably committee meetings same time Mondays at 5, probably start this Monday. Signature cards at presidents meeting to get them all done. Working with SPO office to do another finance presentation.

Coates: Inventory is crazy huge project. Plan on putting new stuff this year in first?

Boiteau: I need somebody to do inventory and scan new items in right away.

Coates: Always can possibly add part time student employee.

Cologna: Probably the best idea.

Boiteau: Have to meet with each individual group and they will probably try to hide things.

Coates: Update finance handbook?

Boiteau: Going to work on it this week.

Coates: Want to add a rule because I had problems with group coming back and asking for money from 500 account in cash after they were derecognized. But that’s not going to happen. Try and make a rule where it stays for 2 years and then gets rolled back over to tax unless the group comes back then they get it back.

Cologna: What happened with field lighting and rock gym?

Coates: Updates lots of updates. Want to move it. Might want to build dorms in 20 years. Paid architect to come down and want to move it near the toxic zone. Completely sloped. By abandoned farmhouse, edge of URI property. Found a clearing. Estimate was $104,000 to move whole thing give or take. Don’t like the idea and stated that and leadership department is against it. I had to convince to furnish the gym they’re building. They were not going to put fitness equipment in. Hopefully it will all stay put. Shouldn’t take long to build but this is URI.

Academic

Cologna: Since last semester was going ahead with mandatory syllabus. Pushed aside from summer but want to start right away. No academic complaints yet. Jorge gave some complaints over the summer. Professor at coastal institute trying to get NY Times. Website says they don’t deliver. Gave them account manager info from USA Today to try and work something out. Also I was talking to crew team, looking to give us picture of new boat for the office.

Rodrigues: 2 of my courses online never had what constituted as grades online and they never told the class.

Boiteau: It’s up to professor to go by the standard.

Rodrigues: the URI 101 senate presentation?

Cologna: URI 101 lady is impressed and has it posted it on website. We can send people like us to present or have the mentors do it.

Sinapi: Textbooks. Deadline was 2/3 months ago and now students are paying double because professors didn’t post.

Vice President

Prata: Retreat is 25th of September. High ropes. Don’t have a time yet. I’ll let you know. Sign waivers ahead of time. Formal in December or January? First 3 days off campus I almost got killed. No stop signs by my house in Narragansett. Hopefully external could look into that. Hope you had good summer.

Cultural

Davis: Meetings Tuesdays at 6 pm. Want to do 2 projects per semester. On October 5th (Tuesday) at 6pm event for diversity week. Under construction exactly what. Know by next meeting. This week there will be meeting for that.

Coates: Other thing they did was gingerbread house competition with different groups.

Rodrigues: Combine that with cultural appreciation?

Davis: I was thinking of making it a cultural week activity.

External

Stewart: I want to do another cleanup in late October before it’s too cold. If we can have the help from last time but more organized. Get the message out. Need a better way to get it out to off campus.

Pezza: Put adds around Narragansett

Stewart: Get it done early and have everything covered. Lobbying. I have an organized report with good way to start it up and a ton of info. Don’t know if I should run it through my committee or run through separate group? Don’t know if it’s too much for my committee. I have all info that you can get info from me this week. Going to call more schools, didn’t get enough last year. Try to get meeting with somebody. I need more ideas only have like 2 people on my committee but a lot of people had interest. Tough to set it up. Coalition meeting this week.

Coates: Going to go to first coalition meeting but probably not for rest of year. Have off campus reps choose somebody to go. I have 3 new committees I need to go to. And every faculty senate meeting.

Campus

Sinapi: Buses are going opposite of how they were. No idea how that’s going to work until I see it. Single semester parking, working with permit store to make it happen. Won’t happen until next Fall maybe. Car sharing meeting is later in month. Ellery looks dredged.

Cologna: It had fish in it with 1 head.

Sinapi: See if they plan on doing anything else. Online voting, bus GPS, blue lights if they go out. More website being interactive, $2837 pledged for Ellery.

Coates: First safety and lighting walk?

Sinapi: After lsats unless lights go out earlier.

Coates: 1 area in mind where lights are needed.

Treasurer

MacKinnon: Thought we paid bills in summer and Kim explained we were closed in the summer. See what happened with that. Have to relearn the finance handbook.

DOC

Pezza: Need to set up twitter and facebook for elections now that were back. Have simple terms on how to declare. Get newspapers out there more. Had internship and created media list. We can pass it down to future DOC’s. If we want to get something out let me know ahead of time so I can research and get it out. As far as adds go, need people with graphic design experience if anybody can help.

Coates: Talk to Kim

Coates: Was going to put you in charge of names we got at first night.

Pezza: I can email a thing about running for senate and tell them about updates on senate and facebook pages.

Secretary

Segal: My minutes suck because my computer is broken and I forgot how to take minutes but I hope you all had a fabulous summer!

Coates: Hurry up!

Elections

Rodrigues: Sam has done a great job with adds. We have 5 booths in the coming 2 weeks. 2 at Hope 3 in union. Union is 15th 21st and 22nd at organization fair and Hope is 16th and 20th. 2 the first week, 3 the 2nd. By first senate meeting handing out first 2 sign ups. Minimum 2 people maximum 3 people. Got banner for fall elections. What about mail in ballots on campus for future?

Coates: Wouldn’t be able to verify it.

Rodrigues: Just an idea because it caused high turnouts in Oregon.

Prata: Demographics?

Rodrigues: I don’t know but high turnout because of simplicity.

Sinapi: Online voting would work and be cheaper.

Prata: I don’t think for this election it would happen

Coates: Send sign up sheet around tomorrow during meeting and then on listserv.

Coates: Specific adds for specific college seats.

Rodrigues: Working on that with Sam

President

Coates: Got an email from athletics advisory board asking for a student liaison. Liaisons in general appreciate you talking to individual senators. Get younger members more ready for exec. Been talking to administration and we have a bad reputation of showing up. Eventually they’re going to hand pick a student instead of going to senate. More people at meetings the better. Master calendar being worked on for school and iphone and android app. Voter registration drive wants to get done. 2 things on ballot that affect URI. Needs new buildings to keep rankings. Even though chemistry isn’t best major on campus, it supports all other majors. Also state crime lab. Gross apartments are still here. Students gutted them. Contacted for board of governors student advisory council. Meeting is September 15th and I guess I should be at it. Sunday September 19th 2 pm exec our house. Public info booths this year.

SOARC

Messineo: I have nothing. Presidents meeting Monday.
