Stipend Review

 

  • The Good 5 Cent Cigar
    • Business Manager
      • Current business manager is in the position for 4 semesters.  Manage financial records, expenses, budgetary responsibilities.  Prepares budget of the group to the Student Senate.  Manages the stipends for the group.  Sends out purchase requisitions.  Deals with clients and customers through advertising clerks.  Hire, train, and manages advertising clerks to reach out to local businesses to advertise in the paper.  Reach out to potential clients and customers for the newspaper.  Send out invoices and copies of the newspaper to the clients.  Manages the payroll.  About 10-12 hours in office weekly.  Meet with editor in chief weekly.  No more than 2 hours spent doing business outside of the office.
      • Advertisement process: reach out to businesses for advertising in the paper. Fill out forms, draft up example for what will be in the paper.  Advertisements go to the design editor before it is printed in the paper.  Manages a log of who the advertising clerks have reached out to.  Advertisements are more focused toward businesses in the local are that students are likely to frequent.
      • The responsibilities of the position are broad and required a good understanding of finances.  Such duties would be difficult to allocate to other members of the group.
      • Hired and trained the delivery driver for the newspaper.

    • Production Manager (Two people in position)
      • There are two mediums for the newspaper: Website and paper.  Design the layout of the website.  Maintain and clean up website.  Times the release of the website content to be released at a certain time.  Two hours weekly in office.  Spend about 18 hours weekly outside of the office doing duties.
      • The website takes hours to do; the print copy takes hours to do.  The duties and responsibilities of the position would be too much for one person to do.
      • The web design requires a good understanding of the software to manage. There was a significant learning curve what first entering the position.  Creates and maintains the transition material for the position.
      • Part of the duties is to ensure that there is exclusive content for the website.  There is more content on the website than on the physical paper including videos.
      • Required to write on story a week.

    • News Editor (Two people in position)
      • Monday: check in with all writers for new, features, op-ed.  Check in with writers to ensure that they can meet deadline.  Give advice on how to maintain contact with source.  Inform managing editor of goings on.  Write one story weekly.
      • Tuesday: check in to ensure that writers can contact their sources.  Edits stories.
      • Wednesday: Continue editing stories.  Update managing editor and editor in chief.  When layout is made, edits each page.  Each page is edited three times.  Remains in office until pages are printed.
      • Thursdays: update and add new story ideas to master story list.  Pitch ideas for what was added.
      • Friday-Sunday: reach out to contacts for their own story.
      • Edits: Fact-checking and ensuring that formatting meets AP style.  Ensure that the stories are in the best possible format.  Edits almost everything (does not edit own work)
      • No required office hours in bylaws.  Does two office hours weekly.  Spend 8 hours outside of office doing work.
