COMMITTEE DISCUSSION:
- Library Hours Bill
- Meeting began late due to the meeting with Dean of Libraries discussing the plan to pass opinion bill regarding library hours
- Originally the opinion bill was left vague so that our intentions didn’t seem scattered and we could receive support from the general senate
- The Dean of Libraries hopes for data to come back to him regarding student opinions
- We hope our opinion bill will show a representation of student opinion
- We want to add specifications to the bill which forces us to specify our exact desires of which we find reasonable and doable while still being ambitious on student behalf
- Originally our idea was to open the first floor of the library for 24 hours a day during the final week and reading days
- Impossible because the stairwells have no locks so the entire building would be accessible
- Also staffing would be difficult. Student employees aren’t capable of keeping the Library open due to liability during emergencies
- Two staff members need to be in the library during normal hours
- Now our idea is to extend overall library hours until 2 AM every day during the finals period
- We feel that our school matches the national average that library traffic stops roughly around 2 AM therefore having it open 24 hours wouldn’t be cost-effective.
- In addition, we want the library to open earlier on weekends especially during finals week
- Currently the library opens at 11 or 1PM on weekend days
- Library hours seem inconsistent between days and also from week to week.
- The Dean of Libraries hopes for data to come back to him regarding student opinions
