CULTURAL COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES                              October 23rd, 2017

Committee Members Present: Creese, Kohl, McWeeney

Committee Members Absent: Vu, Ndayishmiye

Non-Committee Members: George Gallien, director of MSSC

 

Meeting Start Time: 5:06PM

 

-Nicolette presented on what cultural committee historically does

àpeople tend to think “arts and crafts-y” but trying to get more cultural programming done

àAce of Cakes

àSpirit of Giving

àRhody Paws

àhopefully put on monthly diversity events

-i.e. “what is privilege?” event for October last Monday

  • George Gallien
    • discussed former programming events MSSC has sponsored
    • two events this week: “Jane the Virgin” and “Cultural Mixer”
    • interested in co-programming with Providence campus
    • hopefully getting speakers for MLK celebration in February
    • co-sponsoring Kwanzaa celebration in December

àDomestic and Sexual Violence Awareness

-resources we can use for programming

-future plans

àMental Health Awareness WEEK

 

-assign liaisons to certain centers on campus i.e. multicultural center, counseling center, etc.

àtry to have monthly meetings

*reaching out to have more new senators on cultural committee (kind of small right now L)

*each committee member present was assigned to a certain center

 

-explained accessibility challenge

àfeedback on: simulated or walking around with faculty/staff/students (similar to safety and lighting walk) to different points of campus to see, for example, “if I was in a wheelchair could I access this building?”

àGeorge Gallien: talked about inviting disabled people to get first-hand opinions

à*getting more opinions on if we should physically go around campus or just simulate the activity

 

-next month: Native American History Month

àstart compiling ideas? for different programming

àideally based off of bill for Indigenous Peoples’ Day bill

à*maybe doing program that sheds some light on actually history of Columbus

àways to better advertise future monthly programming to campus

 

**next week: start to think of different ways we can advertise, types of activities for programming that we can do with Columbus
