COMMITTEE DISCUSSION:
- Athletic Director – Thor
- Football Stadium
- Used 6 days a week in the fall and 2 days a week in the spring
- Idea proposal – Turf the stadium
- The grass stadium doesn’t allow for a lot of use
- The grounds crew is recommending no more than 24 hours a week currently
- Turf could allow 18 hours a day and is better for bad weather
- Club sports, intermural sports, varsity sports, marching band, and student orgs could use the field (amongst others)
- College age students coming up is dwindling – this would be a good way to show off the school
- We could hold more events – championships, super bowls, etc.
- We could put this into admissions
- Outdoor concerts and music festivals
- Scheduled out when intermural sports, club sports, student orgs, football, and varsity athletics could block off practices
- It’s best to do it at the football stadium and not another stadium because of the seating and atmosphere and bathrooms, etc. offered.
- Field turf has a shelf life of 8-10 years and lighting would be offered
- Estimated cost in 2010 was $3.2 million; more recently the estimated cost is $3.8 million with a replacement cost in 10 years of $1.1 million
- All of the recreation offices are supporting this and willing to help with scheduling – belief that they are willing to take on this responsibility
- If this was endorsed, then it would have to go to the Council of Higher Education for their approval – it wouldn’t be done without the support of the students
- Hopes to be brought to the Council of Higher Education right after he brings it to senate
- Concerns on access
- Construction would start in April and be done in August
- Revenue to CSIC – Most conferences occur at Brown
- Easy to maintain, whereas right now it takes a full day to paint the field
