COMMITTEE DISCUSSION:
- Sailing Team & Club
- Update on what has happened since the spring of
- Passed out “Plan to Replace URI Sailing Team’s Aging Fleet on Course Thanks to Recent Gifts”
- Passed out “The University of Rhode Island Sailing Future Fund”
- Generous alumni and URI Foundation
- Goal: 3 Fleet Purchase Plan
- 350,000 dollars for all fleets
- Future Fund: $450,000 goal because they’re trying to build some resources to pay for coaching
- Fleet itself: $350,000
- $133,000 raised
- Remaining two fleets: 420 fleet and instructional fleet
- 8 Boats: 420 Fleet ($70,000)
- 10-12 Boats: In need of modern boats ($100,000)
- Not all fleets would be purchased at the same time
- Hope to move sailing, as a whole, forward; not just the team and not just the club
- Going to be soliciting people in the sailing world and working with the URI Foundation on the corporate side of things
- All in all, working on well rounded fundraising
- Far beyond the reasonable replacement cycle of the fleet
- Technology changes
- Everyone is working together to fundraise all of the boats
- Lab fee for the sailing class cannot be rolled over to purchase the boats
- Logical for the provost to allocate some funding
- University makes a contribution to keep the facility running
- Their contribution is targeted in non-boat related things
- Yearly costs change in relation to the updated fleet
- Ideally, maintenance costs would go down
- Workers’ line would go down
- November-March is all maintenance
- Insurance could change down the road
- Re-evaluation after receiving the fleet
- First installment of boats: pretty much prepared to buy the fleet for the team. Prepared for the purchase for August of this year
- In the beginning of launching the fundraising for the Club boats
- Haven’t reached out to the list yet
- Current team boats have been pre-sold
- Funds from those boats would potentially go back toward future capital needs and on-coming needs such as power boats, docks
- New boats need to be paid for up front; the boats being sold won’t be sold between August 1 and September 1. The new boats will need to be paid for in the next couple months
- Chairman Anderson is invested in the club
- Capital campaign hasn’t kicked off for the fleets for the club yet
- All one account: The URI Sailing Future Fund
- President Rode is uncomfortable with a bill to allocate funds currently with such a piece of money not fundraised
- By the time a bill would be prepared, we would turnover our executive board
- Hope to include in an outreach campaign a commitment from the senate
- Positive feeling on apportioning $30,000 upon the URI Foundation’s fundraising
- Finance Outline per President Rode
- Need to fundraise $300,000
- Already fundraised: $133,000
- If the URI Sailing Future Fund raises $300,000, we would contribute $30,000
- Realistic commitment: Re-visit date in Spring of 2017
- Non-perpetual: Spring 2017
