COMMITTEE DISCUSSION:

Nancy Arnold Devaney (Narragansett Prevention Partnership) and Ed Parr met with our committee this week

-Big on the whole neighbor thing work and expand on being a good neighbor

-Our goal is to get more involved with volunteering in the Narragansett community.

-The booklet needs to be printed and distributed by August 15th generate concepts that Ed can work on

-Ed wants to have a regular meeting time with our committee to make a book more of OUR own for the following year

-Nancy gets in touch with every single rental agent and they give these agencies one book per house but they want to try and get one per person in the house, which is a stretch, but aim to have at least 2 booklets per house

-Ed: The town of Narragansett saw the layout of the booklet and tossed in 5,000 to pay for the costs of the booklet. Ed and Nancy want the University to pick up the small cost, possibly split between the university and the town of Narragansett. The symbolic link between the university and the town and they get our perspective because we are the students and we see things the adults that are making this book are not seeing.

-Review & Critiquing the Living Right in Narragansett booklet

Page 2 & 3: More recent and closer to home alcohol poisoning stories and the pages are text heavy. Need to realize binge drinking is going to happen regardless we cant stop it but we can try to cut it down. A key box what is standard drinking, how many drinks

affect what kind of body types and time limits. Measurement of drinks and how much alcohol contains the effects of it.

What can we do to make drinking safer?

Page 4 & 5: The title “Binge drinking and rape seem to go hand-in hand on U.S. college campuses” we are off-campus so change the title to make it sound as if its on and off campus. A tips textbox for women to prevent date rape.

Page 8: We all find “Know our rules if you’re drinking Narragansett” very useful. Add something about consequences with fake I.D.’s, driving with alcohol in car and penalties,

-thinking about the size of the book condense the writing, make catchy headlines, smaller booklet with a couple of spreads and have smaller topics

-add in something about liquor stores in conjunction with police and how they are cooperating

-We would like to meet with Ed and Nancy again and plan on setting up a time via email. We can also have an online meeting. Ed plans on taking our comments and come up with a topical page outline and see if we agree and move ahead and get done with it for the year. From a communication method what is more likely to grab more attention.

Nancy and Ed took our committees picture.

Jake emailed the realtors to thank people at the carnival. He also emailed the winners of the carnival to pick up their prizes again. Senator Reids bill find the bill S707 bill to amend higher education and it is still in committee and check it every week and see what happens with it.

-Carbon Monoxide: wants to make sure people are not being taken advantage of in their rooms.

Private landlord in Eastward contacted Jake for renters 6 miles away from the beach.

Met with Katrina Dorsey (involved with commuter housing office) wants to have a lunch with commuters that’s in Hope in the fall.

Kim told Jake about the renovations to the union is basically for the commuters

– we should have a booth by the commuters lot or the ripta lots so we can get students involved about these renovations in the union and what these commuters want
