Fall and Spring Elections

Both Fall and Spring Elections are hosted by the Student Senate. All eligible members of the student body are able to participate in the election. There are two (2) elections every year. During the Spring semester elections 40 general senate seats are open to eligible students. During the Fall semester election all seats that opened up during the summer and 5 First Year to eligible students.

Internal Elections
If seats become open during the Fall semester an internal election will be held to fill those seats. Each seat is voted on by the Student Senate itself, not the student body.

Follow these steps to run for Student Senate and make a difference at URI:

  • SPRING 2024 ELECTIONS: IMPORTANT DATES
    • Declaration Period: Ends at 4 pm on Wednesday, February 28, 2024
    • Eligibility Confirmation: Thursday, February 29, 2024
    • Campaign Period: Through Friday, March 8, 2023
    • Elections Dates: Monday, March 4 – Friday, March 8, 2024

Senate Seats: 

  1. Representative for each College – Arts & Sciences, Business, Education and Professional Studies, Engineering, Environment & Life Sciences, Health Sciences, Nursing, Pharmacy, and University College.
  2. Academic College Representatives – represent the interests of students within the eight academic colleges and University College. Each college elects one (1) representative, who also serves as the Liaison to the college. These representatives work with Deans and departments of their college to enhance student life and address college-specific problems. They may also work with student advisory boards if the college has one.
  3. At-Large Representatives – represent the general interests of the student body as a whole. These positions are open to any student, and all students can vote for them. The representatives work on the issues that affect the student community as a whole.

  7. Off-Campus Housing Representatives – represent the interests of students living in the near by off-campus neighborhoods (i.e Narragansett, Bonnet Shores, Pt. Judith, Eastward Look, etc). The representatives make up the Off-Campus Housing Caucus and meet with the Commuter Housing Office to work on issues relating to off-campus living and commuting.
