  1. Marine Science Society
    1. Appealing funding status (the SOARC recognized the group as unfunded)
      1. Requesting funding for events
        1. Want to advocate for environmental conservation.
          1. Goes on tour to raise awareness and network with people to get members of the club more experience as to what they want to do after college.
        2. Group does preparing for classes/what to take (not just for marine affairs, and to coordinate schedules)
  • Fundraises at first night and during earth day.
  1. Mission statement: The purpose of the Marine Science Society is to have people who are interest in marine affairs come together to appreciate and learn more about the marine sciences.
  2. Have a marine jeopardy night, will be notifying CELS for interest members.
  3. It is believed that the group was more academic in the past. The current president is trying to transition the group into more of an interest group.

Stipend Review

 

  • WRIU
    • RIU2 Sports Director
      • Online sister station of WRUI2.  In charge of getting students more intrigued and understanding of what it means to broadcast on online sports radio.  Trains broadcasters how to run the station board and what to do when at the sports venue.  Teach students how to handle expensive equipment and not break it.  Sit down with students and provide insight into what goes into making the shows.  Goes to arena/stadium before the games and prepares broadcasters for their broadcast.  Creates the schedules for the broadcasts.  Handles communications between the broadcasters.  Women’s/Men’s soccer, ice-hockey, basketball, softball.  Covers the same shows as the WRIU2.  Identify the hard-working broadcasters and recommend them to FM radio.  Listen to the broadcasts to ensure that they are quality.  Oversees 18 students at the station.

    • Chief Engineer
      • Equipment breaks.  The radio station has a lot of technology.  The chief engineer analyzes and repairs broken equipment.  Orders new technology and is in the process of modernizing the station.  It is an on-call position. Redoes the station playlist (equipment breaks often).  Helps broadcasters with technical difficulties.  Finds vendors to order specialized equipment. Other engineer is a broadcast engineer that is hired on for specialized problems.  The chief engineer is responsible for all other technical issues at the station.  Ensures that all broadcasts are up to FCC broadcast regulations.  Ensure that all equipment is FCC approved.  Encounters about 4-5 technical issues at the station over the course of a week.  If the FCC license is revoked, the station cannot broadcast.
      • Skill requirements/training: Contacts the previous engineer at the station if there are problems that cannot be handled by the current engineer

    • Assistant General Manager
      • Essentially the Vice-president.  Handles relations with parking services and building itself.  Has keycard control and controls building access. Takes minutes and attendance for staff meetings.  If someone wants to do promotion, has power to approve or deny the promotional material.  Promotional items are for the radiothon and other fundraising to ensure that the station has funding.  Has two required office hours, does one-two hours outside the office.  Ensures that there are up to date FM DJ contacts.  The position is necessary to organize the station and ensure building access.  Keycard access is created and updated coming out of the end of the year and does occasional updates over the day.  Handles and explains the transition materials to new members.
      • Responsible to take over for the general manager if she was absent.  Has not happened yet.
      • Without the position, the redistribution of work would place a heavy burden on the other members of the group.

    • Founded 1971.  Used to operate Monday through Thursday
    • Editor in Chief
      • Is in contact with all the editors, reporters, photographers, drivers of newspaper truck.  Meets with communication offices and the student senate.  Maintain relations with department heads for story ideas.  Section editors also check in with different department heads.  Investigates stories even when pursuing difficult or sensitive topics.  Trains students to be professional reporters.
      • Week starts on Thursday with the weekly staff meeting.  Ensure that the stories are assigned.  Ensure that stories that need photos get photos.  Speak with reporters to ensure that loose ends are wrapped up.  Get ads and creates the layout of the paper.  Holds office hours from 3-5.  Print and content deadline is Tuesday at 5.  The content is edited as a group.  Wednesday is the production night.  Looks over the stories and makes adjustments as needed.  In charge of overseeing the layout.  Does final check-in to ensure that everything is all set for the final production.  After each section is laid out, goes through the paper to ensure that everything is as it should be.  Stays up into the early morning on Thursdays to get everything done.  Sends the final paper off to get printed.
      • Sends out contacts for each story-pass out phone numbers and emails.  Does follow-ups and check-ins with the reporters.  Ensure that stories are updated in the event of dropped stories.
      • Election process: Anyone who has been in at least 3 meetings can vote in the elections by secret ballot.  The Editor in Chief runs all elections except their own.
      • Not required to write stories for papers, usually does so anyways.
