Call for Departmental Nominations for Graduate Diversity Awards 2016-2017

The Graduate School invites departments to nominate students for Graduate School Diversity Awards for the 2016-2017 academic year. The nomination form is available at:

There are no limits to the number of nominations.

  • These awards come in the forms of tuition scholarship and/or stipend.

    Awards will be given to students who are U.S. citizens or Permanent Residents and members of one of the minority groups: Hispanic or Latino, Black or African American, Asian, American Indian or Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander. For more information, visit

    Awards are given to qualified students from such groups in recognition of their achievement and promise as scholars, and are intended to enable students to pursue graduate studies and research.

    The primary criteria by which nominees will be judged are demonstrated ability and promise of academic achievement. Letters of reference, cumulative grade point averages, scores on appropriate national tests where pertinent, personal statements of professional objectives, and other evidence of promise (e.g., publications, professional participation, etc.) will be reviewed and evaluated by the Committee in making its decision.

    The 2016-2017 Awards will carry either a stipend comparable to that of a graduate assistant at the appropriate level for the academic semester and/or cover individual tuition, health insurance, 20% of graduate student fees for either or both the Fall and Spring semesters. An additional $100 will be paid towards the fees to partially offset the cost of the commuter parking fee, which the student will be responsible for paying.

    Nominees for URI Graduate Diversity Awards must be students who are enrolled in a graduate program or will be fully enrolled in a graduate program by September 2016. Applicants for Fall 2016 admission who have not yet matriculated are eligible for nomination. Awardees are required to be full-time students (minimum of 9 credits per semester). Awards are for one academic year only, with the expectation that recipients will be subsequently supported by departmental and/or other funding sources, as arranged by the department, should this be necessary.

      Nominees who are currently enrolled in a URI graduate program should have two letters in support of their nomination. The two letters may be written by any combination of referees from the following list: Department Chair, Director of Graduate Studies, the student’s Major Advisor, or other faculty as might be appropriate. Nominees who are not yet matriculated students at URI should submit one letter of support from the Department Chair or a faculty member.

    2. Electronic or scanned copies of complete undergraduate and graduate transcripts.

    2. A statement from the Department Chair detailing the type and extent of support the department will provide to the nominee should he/she receive the award but not complete all degree requirements within the award year.

Awards will be announced by 31 March 2016, via email to the recipients, with copies to Department Chairs. The initial notices of award for the Diversity Awards for the 2016-2017 academic year will specify that the Diversity Award is contingent upon available funding and upon satisfactory academic progress at the beginning of the Fall 2016 semester.
