Billing & Policies for NSE



Application Fee

Upon submission of an NSE application, all URI students must pay a $150 non-refundable application and placement fee.

Off Campus Study Registration Fee

$494 (Subject to change) per semester, non-refundable; paid to URI with submission of an OCS form to the Office of International Education

Administrative Fee

$350 per semester, paid to URI

Travel Expenses

Varies, arranged and paid by participating student

Room & Board

Varies, paid to host institution.

Tuition and Fees

Instate tuition and fees of the host institution paid to host institution.

URI in-state resident tuition and fees, paid to URI.

Financial Aid

URI scholarships, such as Centennial, Hardge or University Grants do not apply to program costs, and Federal Aid is disbursed by the host institution, for Plan A participants.

URI tuition waivers and scholarships, such as Centennial, Hardge, or University Grants do apply to program costs, and Federal Aid is disbursed by URI, for Plan B participants.


It is important to know that:

  • For PLAN B, the amount of an institutional award, such as the Hardge Grant or a Centennial Scholarship, will be based, not on previous URI awards, but on instate tuition and fess. In no case will the award exceed these costs as determined by the URI Financial Aid Office. Furthermore, Centennial and other URI grants will be the first to be applied to the student’s financial aid package, prior to any other aid applications.
  • Rhode Island tuition waivers can be applied only to PLAN B exchange programs.
  • Students on PLAN A placements will need to work with a Financial Aid officer at the host campus, after acceptance, to process any federal aid. This will include updating your FAFSA forms with the federal government if applicable. To avoid losing any URI scholarships, consider a Plan B partner university.

3. Additional URI NSE Fees

In addition to the instate tuition and fees, housing and meal plan costs, ALL students intending to participate on NSE must pay the following required fees to URI for each term they are abroad:

The non-refundable NSE Application Fee of $150 is required when submitting an application. It is non-refundable whether admitted or not and can be rolled to another semester if an applicant wishes to try for a different term.

The Off-Campus Study Registration Fee (Click here for undergraduate fees) maintains your registration while studying elsewhere. It will ensure that you remain registered, that all eligible financial aid will be applied to the program, and that you will have continued, uninterrupted access, to all URI services (such as e-mail, health insurance, and academic advising).

The OIE Administrative Fee (2015-16): $350 per semester/$150 per summer session) covers the costs of operating off-campus programs, the expenses associated with URI Risk Management Policies and URI Pre-Departure Workshops and materials.

Note: All fees are subject to change.

Important Notes about Financial Aid

  • Disbursement of financial aid can only be made ten days prior to the start of the recipient’s first day of class. Therefore, some NSE expenses (housing, airline tickets, books) will need to be paid before financial aid is received and students should plan accordingly.
