Each year the department awards a number of students with scholarships for their achievement in the program. Unless otherwise noted below, students are chosen by our faculty to receive these scholarships. The amounts and number of scholarships awarded will vary from year to year.
Jesse M. Simmons Memorial Scholarship in Art
Through the URI Foundation and the estate of Antoinette H. Simmons, our department awards the Jesse M. Simmons Memorial Scholarship in Art to incoming and current students who show talent in painting and have a financial need.
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must be a freshman or incoming art studio major who shows exceptional merit, or a sophomore or junior art major who displays outstanding artistic achievement and promise in painting. Recipients may not receive an award more than twice in a three-year period
- Outstanding high school record or GPA of 3.0 in art studio courses for two semesters prior to the period of the award.
- Must have financial need as identified by the URI Office of Enrollment Services.
- Must plan to remain an art major at the University of Rhode Island.
The awards committee for this scholarship includes three faculty members from any of the following areas: painting, drawing, printmaking, film, photography, and digital art.
David Ketner Award
David Ketner taught drawing and painting at URI and died in 1986. A fund was established in his memory to give an annual cash award to a promising junior majoring in art studio at URI. With the generous help of alumni and friends, our department has been able to give this award every year to one or two students. It is traditionally presented at our Annual Student Exhibition.
To be eligible for this award, students must enter work in the URI Department of Art and Art History Annual Student Exhibition. The award recipient(s) is selected by two outside jurors.
Calabro Sculpture Award
Richard Calabro, an emeritus professor of sculpture, funds this award intended for the most promising sculpture student at the junior level.
Bart Parker taught photography at URI for over three decades and passed away in 2013. A fund was established in his memory to give an annual cash award to a promising photography student at URI. With the generous help of alumni and friends, our department started this award in 2015. It is traditionally presented at our Annual Student Exhibition.
