Art History (B.A.)

Curriculum

A total of 120 credits is required for graduation. Art History majors must take 30-45 credits in art history, and fulfill the requirements of the general education program. Of the 120 credits required for graduation, 42 credits must be in courses numbered 300 or above.

The study of at least one foreign language is strongly recommended, and many students double major in art history and another discipline, including foreign languages, history, anthropology, studio art, and more.

Program Requirements

Required Core Courses (6 credits):

  • ART 251: Introduction to Art History: Ancient-Medieval (3 credits)
  • ART 252: Introduction to Art History: Renaissance-Modern (3 credits)

At least 12 credits must be taken from:

  • ART 354: Art of the Ancient Mediterranean (Greek/Roman) (3 credits)
  • ART 356: Medieval Art (3 credits)
  • ART 359: Baroque Art (3 credits)
  • ART 361: Modern Art (3 credits)
  • ART 362: Contemporary Art (3 credits)
  • ART 364: American Art (3 credits)
  • ART 365: Renaissance Art (3 credits)

An additional 6 credits in Art History must be taken from the list above, or one or more 200 or 300 level ART courses.

An additional 6 credits in Art History must be taken at the 400 level (ART 477: Art and Art History Internship will not fulfill this requirement). At least three of these credits must be taken from ART 480: Advanced Topics in European and American Art (3 credits)

It is recommended that students who expect to pursue graduate studies in art history take ART 470: Art History: Senior Projects (3-6 credits).
