Aiming to raise awareness of the inequities in health care in different populations, the URI Academic Health Collaborative hosted Health Disparities Awareness Day recently, featuring poster presentations and lectures from students on at-risk populations.
Psychology major Alexandria Capolino was awarded the top poster prize for her study on opioid misuse and overdose. The poster session was followed by the keynote presentation from Dr. Loni Philip Tabb, Ph.D., associate professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the Dornsife School of Public Health at Drexel University, who spoke on “Cardiovascular Health in the United States — Who You Are, What You Do and Where You Live Matters.”
Three students followed with presentations on HIV/AIDS, the opioid epidemic and women’s health. The winning presenters include:
- Colin Dimond (College of Pharmacy) — Presentation first place winner.
- Benjamin Steele (College of Health Sciences, Physical Therapy) — Presentation second place winner.
- Waverly Findlay (College of Health Sciences, Health Studies) — Presentation third place winner
