During these trying times when most of us are stuck at home, it can be easy to fall into unhealthy habits like spending the day on the couch. It is important to make staying active at home a priority!
Exercise is associated with improved immune functioning and reducing stress. Simply put, especially in these times, we have to keep moving. The URI Department of Kinesiology, part of the College of Health Sciences, offers these tips:
Stuck indoors with kids?
- Try a dance party to your favorite movie soundtrack or finding a workout video. Try the American College of Sports Medicine YouTube playlist.
- Here are some fun games the whole family can play from ShapeAmerica.
- Try Paper Plate Tabata.
Have access to safe, outdoor activities?
- Play active games with your family like tag or go for a walk or jog.
- Schedule time every day for physical activity. It doesn’t have to be all that same time, aim for at least 10-15 minutes 2-3 times per day.
Miss strength training at the gym?
- Try a no-equipment necessary workout like the 7-min workout app or a bootcamp workout video.
- Looking for a family-friendly workout that is more structured? Try a daily, live Phys-Ed class like PE with Joe.”
- Need some inclusive workout options? Try the National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability’s You Tube stream.
