Project Title: Facilitated drinking water testing: impacts and lessons learned
Mentors: Alyson McCann and Jaimie Holmes
Abstract: There is limited information easily accessible to Rhode Island’s private well owners; even though ten percent of the state’s population relies on private drinking water wells. Homeowners attended workshops throughout Rhode Island where they learned about healthy well water practices and had the opportunity to sign out an annual test kit. The data from almost three years of these workshops were compiled and organized to show trends in attendance and testing practices. As the facilitated well water testing continues more attendees are attending workshops and having their water tested through the program. More workshop attendees are testing for all six substances recommended for the annual test kit than not; but a number are not re-testing for total coliform with the State Health Lab. To further improve the program additional outreach to workshop attendees should be initiated with and attendees should be surveyed as to why they do or do not follow testing recommendations.
