Advancing Food Is Medicine in Rhode Island: The Role of Medically Tailored Meals

This project explores opportunities to advance Food Is Medicine (FIM) initiatives in Rhode Island, with a focus on medically tailored meals (MTMs) as an evidence-based approach to preventing and managing diet-related chronic diseases. The brief examines the role of MTMs in improving diet quality, addressing nutrition insecurity, reducing healthcare costs, and promoting health equity, while highlighting existing meal programs, the evolving policy landscape, and opportunities to expand access across the state.

The brief was drafted by Dr. Sarah Amin’s University of Rhode Island NUT 506 Community Nutrition students in collaboration with academic and community partners, including Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island and Brown University Health. Drawing on public health data, existing research, and information from Rhode Island programs and policies, the document outlines recommendations for strengthening Food Is Medicine initiatives through statewide coordination, community engagement, sustainable healthcare coverage, and nutrition counseling.

This work highlights the role of community nutrition education and cross-sector collaboration in informing policy and advancing equitable access to nutrition interventions for Rhode Islanders living with diet-related chronic conditions and nutrition insecurity.
