Information Technology Services | Cybersecurity Month 2023

The overarching theme for Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2023 is “It’s Easy to Stay Safe Online.” As a responsible user of computing technology it is everyone’s responsibility to practice safe computing. It is not necessary for everyone to aspire to become a cybersecurity professional but if you can ‘See Yourself in Cyber” then it will be possible for you practice safer computing choices such as choosing stronger passwords or being aware of phishing attempts.

“Secure Our World”

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month and The University of Rhode Island’s Information Technology Services (ITS) department will conduct an informational campaign to bring cybersecurity awareness to the campus community during the month of October. In collaboration with the National Cybersecurity Campaign: at URI, each week will have a unique focus on the pertinent topics in Cybersecurity.

By being aware of best practices and safety online; The University of Rhode Island encourages the campus community to see yourself in cyber while protecting their part of cyberspace, stressing personal accountability and the importance of taking proactive steps to enhance cybersecurity. Information Technology Services emphasizes that everyone is responsible for safe cybersecurity practices and throughout October, we will focus on the following weekly themes in our communications and outreach:

Week 1 | Use Strong Passwords

Week 2 | Using Multi Factor Authentication

Week 3 | Recognize and Report Phishing

Week 4 | Keep Your Software Up to Date

Are you using 2 Factor Authentication to protect your data?

Learn more about using DUO at URI – Presented by ITS Security Services

What is MFA?
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a security measure that goes beyond a password to double- and triple-verify a user’s identity before they can access data.
What is DUO?
DUO is a 2-factor authentication solution provided by the University of Rhode Island to all active faculty, staff, and students. This tool acts as a second verification when signing into your URI accounts. Verification is implemented via a push notification, SMS message, or phone call.
Why is this so important?
Two-Factor authentication adds an additional layer of protection to URI accounts and the data accessed through them. The easiest way for malicious hackers to access URI’s systems and data is by compromising your URI account credentials. With two-factor authentication, you are protecting yourself and your community against these sorts of attacks and ensuring each link in our security chain is strong.
