Representative Research Projects

  • Hardware Malware Prevention in IoT and CPS Systems - Hardware compromise has substantially increased for past decades considering the globalization of hardware design and manufacturing. With the significant growing of edge devices in IoT and CPS eco-systems, it is vital that we should largely consider the privacy and integrity of computer hardware. This project provides a comprehensive framework which can protect chip security and integrity from hardware malware breach in the untrusted IC supply chain. Deep neural network has been leveraged as the underlying tool for malicious hardware detections. For more details, please contact Professor Yu Bi at yu_bi@uri.edu Continue Reading
  • Toward a Reliable and Resilient Smart Grid - The electrical grid is one of the most essential infrastructures in modern society. Numerous critical sectors, from public service, military, food, finance, transportation, to communication and many others, are substantially dependent upon the reliable supply of electricity. As the electrical grid becomes increasingly dependent on computers and data sharing—providing significant benefits for utilities, customers, and communities—it has also become more vulnerable to both cyber and physical threats. This ONR project addresses the critical needs and technical challenges posed in electrical grid reliability, resiliency, and security. https://web.uri.edu/dura/ For more details, please contact Professor Yan Sun at yansun@uri.edu Continue Reading
  • Intelligent power conversion systems for various applications - Power Electronics is a research field for a power conversion system, a critical part of all electrical systems. This field has been developed for several decades with the rapid development of semiconductors. It means the hardware is key to the power conversion systems. Since the industry continuously has required high performance of power conversion systems, a power conversion system is also necessary to consider more comprehensive circumstances, not only the power systems inside but also input sources and output systems at the same time. The power converter systems should transit from the traditional hardware system to the cyber-physical system by… Continue Reading
  • Towards Computationally Efficient One-Shot Design for Performance-Critical Distributed Multi-Agent Control - Multi-agent systems, an important class of interconnected/networked systems composing a group of distributed interacting entities, have been emerging as a powerful paradigm for various unprecedented engineering applications, such as spacecraft formation flying, air-traffic management, sensory networks, etc. Through collaboration, a multi-agent system can accomplish numerous complicated control tasks that surpass the capability of a single dynamical system, such as moving an oversized object, environmental monitoring, and disaster search/rescue. Moreover, a multi-agent system can solve some problems faster using parallelism and increase robustness through redundancy. However, implementing cooperative multi-agent systems also presents challenges, making many related applications (especially those demanding critical… Continue Reading
  • CAREER: Wireless Collaborative Mixed Reality Networking: Foundations and Algorithms for Joint Communication, Computation, and Learning - Wireless collaborative mixed reality (WCMR) provides an interactive and immersive experience for a group of people that can move freely in an open space and will potentially revolutionize existing collaborative mission-critical training, such as firefighter drills and disaster response training. In order to provide the best immersive experience, WCMR differs drastically from traditional wireless applications in that they demand not only coordinated information to be transferred to collaborating agents in real-time but also fast computations in mobile mixed reality devices. Hence, WCMR requires fundamentally different designs than existing approaches that mainly focus on communication demands and predominantly assume that they… Continue Reading
