The University of Rhode Island chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is dedicated to the academic and professional success of African-American engineering students. Members are offered leadership training, professional development and mentoring opportunities, career placement services and more.

Pre-College Initiative Program

The Pre-College Initiative Program is designed to motivate and encourage youth to pursue an interest in science and engineering majors. 

Academic Excellence Programs

NSBE’s academic excellence programs cater to the members academic needs through tutoring, study jams, test-taking strategies and more.

Professional Development

To prepare undergraduates for a successful career, NSBE conducts workshops for members to learn about resume writing and interviewing techniques from industry representatives. URI engineering professors and industry professionals also speak NSBE members about research and work opportunities.

TORCH

The Technical Out-Reach and Community Help (TORCH) Program emphasizes giving back to communities and informing communities of the possibilities in STEM fields.

Conferences

The URI NSBE chapter attends a regional conference and national conference. Each conference features workshops, career fairs and lots of networking opportunities. In addition, a leadership conference is held during the summer for incoming and current NSBE members holding executive board positions.

Umbrella Organization

With more than 600 chapters and nearly 25,000 active members in the U.S. and abroad, NSBE is one of the largest student-governed organizations based in the United States.
