Host your next innovation event in the College of Engineering’s Ideation and Innovation Studio.
The Ideation and Innovation Studio is the College of Engineering’s collaborative makerspace for design, prototyping, and creativity. When not in use for academic or instructional activities, the Studio may be reserved for approved events that support education, innovation, and student engagement. Typical uses include hackathons, design challenges, workshops, and student organization events.
Who Can Reserve the Studio
Priority for reservations is given to:
- College of Engineering courses and student innovation projects
- URI-recognized student organizations, especially those in STEM or entrepreneurship
- URI academic departments or administrative offices hosting innovation-related events
External organizations may request use on a limited basis, subject to approval and staffing availability.
Available Spaces & Equipment
The Studio includes flexible collaboration areas and work tables located in Toray Commons and access to advanced tools such as 3D printers, resin printers, a laser cutter, soldering stations, and electronics benches. Reservation Guidelines
- Requests should be submitted at least three weeks before the intended event date.
- Events are typically limited to evening hours or weekends.
- Trained College of Engineering staff member(s) or student monitors must be present when equipment is in use.
- All participants must follow posted lab and safety policies. Certain tools (e.g., laser cutter, soldering stations) may require pre-approved operators.
- The reserving group is responsible for returning the space to its original condition.
- Food and beverages are permitted only in designated areas.
Fees
Use of the Studio is subject to a facility fee to help cover supervision, materials, and maintenance costs. Typical rates include:
- Staffing fee is $35/hr/technician. One technician is needed to support up to 25 projects at a time. Two or more technicians are required for larger group sizes.
- Materials use fee is $75/hr. This covers filament, resin, and other consumable use.
An estimate of total cost will be provided once a reservation request is reviewed.
