Passport delays

The U.S. Department of State is advising that passport processing is delayed.

This means students, faculty and staff will need to prepare further in advance if they intend to travel in 2022 and are in need of a new passport (or renewal).

Current processing times from the US Department of State:

Routine – Effective October 29, 2021, routine service can take up to 11 weeks from the day an application is submitted to the day a new passport is received.

Expedited –  Can take up to 7 weeks from the day an application is submitted to the day a new passport is received. These door-to-door timeframes include both our processing times and mailing times on the front and back end.

Education abroad program participants need their passport weeks ahead of their actual program departure date. If you intend to go abroad in the coming months and are not sure if you need to renew your passport, check the expiration date and make sure it is valid for six months after the end date of your intended education abroad program.

Visit the U.S. Department of State for current passport processing updates.

Students may also contact the URI Office of International Education or their program provider with further questions.
