Curricular Practical Training (CPT) permits F-1 visa holders to work in an area that relates to their major and the experience must be part of their program of study. A designated school official may authorize CPT during your first semester if your program requires this type of experience. The official will provide you with a new Form I-20 that shows that the CPT request has been approved. Please note, if you have used 12 months or more of full-time CPT, you will become ineligible for OPT.
- Part-time CPT – Up to 20 hours while school is in session
- Full-time CPT – Up to 40 hours when school is not in session
- CPT requires a signed cooperative agreement and an offer letter from an employer
