First-Generation Students
Studying abroad can be a rewarding experience and immersive way to learn about a new culture and enrich your college experience. There are many factors to consider when preparing to study abroad such as the culture of the country, funding for your experience and how this experience can be used in your career. As a first-generation student, you or your family may not be privy to some of these factors and their implications. Understanding the various elements of studying abroad and how those elements affect you can be helpful in your preparations.
Things to Consider
- How can I present studying abroad as a positive and accessible opportunity to my family?
- What type of study abroad program works best for me? Long term (semester long) or short term (Winter J-Term/Spring Break/Summer Break)?
- Why do I want to go to my country of interest (cultural background, affordability, historical interests, etc.)?
- Does this program allow me to earn credits that count towards my major?
- How can this study abroad experience make me more marketable in my field of study and/or chosen career path?
- How can I best make the experience affordable for myself? Is financial aid available?
- Will I need a passport?

Can assist students with featuring their study abroad experience in resumes and cover letters to make the student marketable in their chosen career field.
Enrollment Services
Provides walk-in financial aid counseling and information regarding student bills. Make an appointment through StarFish for extensive financial aid questions.
FAFSA
It is important to fill out a FAFSA at least 2 months before the Fall semester begins so that Enrollment Services can create a financial aid package based on assets and family income for each student. If you need assistance filling out a FAFSA, please contact Enrollment Services.
