Gender Roles

While researching countries of interest, it is important to be aware of how other countries view gender and gender roles. Other countries may hold values and beliefs different from values and beliefs in the United States. Gender and gender roles can play a factor in safety and overall experience. Things to Consider

  • How do different genders interact with one another in the country I intend to travel to?
  • How does the country view gender roles?
  • Is there a certain dress code expected of my gender in my country of interest?
  • Does the country have laws based on gender?
  • Is my gender recognized in my country of interest?
  • Are there stereotypes of American men, women, or trans individuals in the country I am interested in?
  • What are the views on trans, non-cisgender or non-binary individuals in my country of interest?
  • What are some ways and resources I can use to ensure my safety while studying abroad?
