Study Abroad

Mental Health

When studying abroad, accessibility to resources, accommodations and other needs may be limited. Being in another country can be unfamiliar and create new stressors. It is important to take these factors into consideration when planning to study abroad so that you are prepared and supported while in another country.

Things to Consider

  • What are some stressors of studying abroad and what are ways I can cope with them?
  • Are there discriminatory factors in the country based on mental health?
  • What are the laws in my host country about mental health?
  • Have I researched mental health services in my country of interest?
  • Does the country have the same resources available to me in the United States? Have I worked with any health care professionals to create a crisis or contingency plan while abroad?
  • Have I reached out to my health care providers regarding treatment, medication, etc, while traveling abroad?
  • How will I get my prescriptions while abroad? Can I take them with me? What are the country’s regulations about traveling with prescription medications?
  • Have I reached out to URI Disability Services for Students, the URI Counseling Center and/or the Office of International Education regarding accommodations that can be made for my study abroad experience?
  • Do I feel comfortable disclosing my mental health to another institution?
  • Is there a “travel buddy” with whom I feel comfortable disclosing my mental health matters with while abroad?
