Earl N. Smith III Cabo Verde Summer Program

Applications are due March 1, 2025

This three-credit study abroad program provides students with an in-depth exploration of the political economy of Cabo Verde and the significant contributions of Cabo Verdean women to the country’s history. The program includes visits to three islands, beginning with five days in Mindelo, São Vicente, where students will attend classes, visit the Madeiral Valley and Monte Verde mountains, and experience local cuisine. A ferry ride to Santo Antão offers the opportunity to explore its environmentally preserved landscapes, including scenic villages and the Cova volcano. The program continues in Santiago, where students will spend five days in Assomada, a former maroon region, visiting the museum of resistance, local markets, and surrounding mountains. The program concludes in the capital city of Praia, where students will engage with local communities and gain further insights into Cabo Verdean society. Through site visits, coursework, and cultural engagement, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of the historical and economic forces shaping Cabo Verde.
